Egg white protein bread provides a great alternative for people on a low-carb diet or who want to avoid grains, gluten and nuts. In addition, egg whites offer several health benefits, they are easy to bake with and very filling.
However, plain bread can get boring without flavors. If you like eating bread (besides just using it for sandwiches, burgers and french toast), here are some excellent flavor ideas.
These bread recipes don’t require lots of fancy ingredients, nor will they require more time baking in the kitchen. In fact, you may like them so much, that you’ll want to bake egg white bread more often.
How to Make Basic Egg White Bread:
Check out the video below to make PSMF bread (protein sparing modified fast) using egg white protein powder. Then, simply adjust your recipe using the additional ingredients and flavors you want.
Plus, you can see Maria’s original recipe with real egg whites.
Note: When I add extra flavors or ingredients, I incorporate them after I have whipped the egg whites into stiff peaks. Then, I blend or fold them into the mixture before baking.
Sometimes the extra seasonings cause the egg whites to not whip correctly, or the process takes longer. Therefore, it’s safer to wait until the egg whites are whipped.
17 Flavors for Egg White Protein Bread:
-
Lemon Loaf
I add lemon extract and a teaspoon of stevia. You can also use the juice of a fresh lemon for more tart flavor. (Try this idea with orange or orange extract too!)
-
Garlic Bread
For garlic bread, you can use garlic powder, granulated garlic and/or fresh chopped garlic cloves
-
Olive Rolls
I take half a can of black olives and slice them up for this recipe. Plus, you can add extra seasonings if you want. Fold the olives into the dough or add them on top of the bread before you bake it.
-
Rosemary Bread
Fresh rosemary is best, and you want to finely chop it. I have a live rosemary plant in my backyard, so this recipe is a no-brainer.
-
Jalapeno Loaf
I use about a quarter cup of diced jalapenos for this bread. Alternatively, you can substitute pepperocinis. Sometimes I even add Tajin chili lime seasoning too.
Artichoke Heart Bread
This recipe is one of my favorites, and it’s really simple to make. I just drain a can of artichoke hearts and dice the hearts into small pieces. Then, I fold them in to the egg whites before I bake. The artichokes make the bread less dry and hearty enough to enjoy plain.
-
Ginger Vanilla Muffins
Combine fresh or dried ginger with vanilla extract and a natural low carb sweetener like stevia. This gives you a dough with a touch of sweetness great for morning muffins or if you have a craving for a sweet treat.
-
Buttery Rolls
You can make your bread taste more buttery in a few different ways – which also lets you control the amount of fat in your bread. Some people brush real butter over the loaf as it finishes baking. Alternatively, you can add a tablespoon of butter powder after you have whipped egg whites. Or, use 1-2 teaspoons of fat-free butter extract.
-
Cinnamon Buns
Make your own cinnamon buns, rolls or bread with cinnamon powder, stevia and salt. I also like to add 1 teaspoon of butter extract for added richness.
Cheesy Bread As the name implies, just add cheese. Mix it in the dough or sprinkle it on top (or both!). Alternatively, you can use 2-3 tablespoons of nutritional yeast if you like the flavor. It gives the bread a heartier taste and more nutrition without the added fat.
“Light” Chocolate Cake
Although this tastes more like chocolate bread than a cake, it can easily satisfy a sweet craving without all the carbs. I use 1-2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, along with stevia and salt. Cinnamon can add a spicy kick as well.
Everything Bagel Bread
This popular seasoning mix makes pretty much everything taste good. You can buy Everything Bagel Seasoning or make it yourself using sesame seeds, sea salt, garlic, onion, black sesame seeds and poppy seeds.
Italian Bread
Italian seasoning smells as good as it tastes, so your kitchen will smell great if you bake this loaf. Use fresh if you can: oregano, basil, marjoram, sage, rosemary and thyme.
Salt-and-Pepper Rolls
This seemingly plain bread surprised my when I made it because of the black pepper “kick”. In fact, it has become one of my favorite flavors. I also like to add butter extract to this recipe.
Onion Bread
Onion lovers: add finely diced fresh onion with onion powder. You don’t need to pre-cook the onions as long as you chop them into small pieces.
Pizza Muffins
Use pepperoni (or your favorite pizza toppings) along with Italian seasoning for savory snacks that are easy to eat on-the-go.
Bacon Bread
Enjoy the flavor of bacon in your bread by adding bacon bits or bacon crumbles. You don’t have to add a lot to get that salty, smoky flavor, try 2-3 tablespoons.
